HOME SAVED BY FIREFIGHTERS

WESTFIELD, PA - Fire crews from Crary Hose out of Westfield, Harrison Valley, Clymer Hose out Sabinsville, along with an ambulance, a Tri-Town Ambulance, as well as, an engine, tanker and rehab unit from Knoxville-Deerfield would all respond to a reported house fire on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, in Hector Township around 12:51PM.

Fire units had to take a different route of travel to the fire scene as Potter Brook Road was blocked by a fallen tree which took down utility lines early Tuesday morning.

Smoke was reported coming from the side of the Houghtaling's residence located at 5058 Phoenix Run Road, when fire personnel arrived on scene. At which time, Knoxville-Deerfield units, Tri-Town Ambulance and Tioga County Fire Coordinator were requested. Later an Elkland fire crew was requested to standby at Westfield's department and a Middlebury fire crew was requested to standby at the Sabinsville's station, FNN was told by Crary Hose Fire Chief who had stopped at the family's home to check on them.

Firefighters had gathered up their equipment and hoses before they made an forcible entry into the owner's basement, where fire crews found a growing fire. 

The fire was reported under control around 1:43PM. Due to the firefighters' diligent work they were able to keep the fire from spreading to the upper floor of the home. The fire was officially reported out around 2:35PM. 

Fire crews were cleared from the scene around 3:15PM.

Crary Hose Company personnel confirmed that the home was saved thanks to all the firefighters who assisted at the scene.

The basement suffered fire, smoke, heat and water damage. There was only smoke reported in the upper the floor of the home.

Chief Marty Hyler and Chief Kyle Mack were said to have lead firefighters in the attack and extinguishing of the flames during this incident.

Vicky Houghtaling, her brother and their 95-year-old mother were able to safely exit the home. The family will be staying at another location for a few days. The family was very thankful to everyone who battled the blaze and saved their home.

The fire marshal will be looking over the home in hopes of determining the cause of the fire.
